I’ve always been into fantasy living spaces; tree houses a la Swiss Family Robinson, rambling secret apartments a la C.S. Lewis, impossible hallways and rooms a la House of Leaves. I think a roulotte would be managable and realistic and just might fill my craving for romantic, bohemian, nomadic (apparently there’s Rom blood in these veins) living. This style in particular would make a kick ass studio. I could do tarot readings on a small pedestal table just outside with the cats weaving their way around the legs of guests and amongst the wildflowers. Add in the Shetland pony and it’s basically my dream come true.
I never used to be a purse girl. I carried a diaper bag while my kids were little but beyond that I’ve always been about the bank card, the ID and a little bit of cash in a jacket pocket. Possibly in a wee clutch if I was going to a formal event. I’ve since learned the love of a good handbag and have added to the list of necessities.
As it was a slowish day at the market today my partner and I ended up having a brief conversation about essential carry-alongs. She divulged the number of her sewing kit collection, spread out about many bags. I admitted to needing my tape measure everywhere I go.
Upon returning home I thought I’d have a better look into this. I emptied my bag and found the following items:
wallet
cellphone
old receipts
AA batteries
a hot wheels car
my measuring tape
my jack knife
4 lipsticks in different colours
1 pot of lip balm
2 tubes of skin moisturizer
my passport
wet wipes
tissues (new and used)
my notebook
4 sharpies
ballpoint pen
3 safety pins
sewing kit
dental floss
keys
Is everyone else’s bag the dumping ground mine is? What’s in yours? Is there some age/bag size correlation? Who’s got a great system for staying more organized?
By the way, the bags in the pic above are made by Jeanne Bayol and I adore them. Were anyone to get one for me I would happily be your sex slave for 3 years.
The LCBO introduced these babies mid-october so of course I had to have one. Then the mister had to have one. At $5 each they’re probably the most expensive glasses I own as the daughter of two auction hounds. I have to say they’re really, really cute. Right down to the little maple leaf etched into their bottoms. You’ll have to take my word for their aesthetic qualities, unfortunately as the camera charger is mia and there don’t seem to be any pictures of them floating around the interwebs. As far as their practical qualities go, I assure any of you hardcore whisk(e)y afficionados that they’re an absolute pleasure to savour your whisk(e)y(s) from, Canadian or otherwise. They’re made by Glencairn Crystal Studio who have endowed them with a lovely snifteresque shape, giving them a nice grip and mad props to the nose of their contents and absolutely divine weighting. Best $5 spent in a long time.
My first experiment with my new glass shall be a proper manhattan.
The second shall be sipping Unibroue’s Fin du Monde from it.
Third will be Blanche de Chambly.
The quilts, the stories and the history are some of my favourite bits of cultural inspiration and I think everyone should have the opportunity to learn about them. They’re travelling and in Philedelphia right now so if they wend their way to a venue close to you please go see them. They’re an amazing testament to community, cooperative and diy spirit. You won’t regret it.

Love these colours for houndstooth. It’s on such a great scale for this application too, don’t you think?

I think they’re kind of magical. They turn shoes into boots. Pretty, colourful, dramatic boots. Those are my favourite kind. Though I haven’t seen anybody in my city sporting them, there does seem to be a trend toward their revival though I daresay it’s probably limited to the really rock ‘n roll among us. Someday I’ll make myself a pair. I’m not equipped with the skills to make as clever a pair as the ones in the picture, but I’ll figure something out.
Would any of you wear spats? What are your thoughts?

I love me some scissors. I’ve got over 18 pairs in my studio. I don’t have these though. It’s a shame I don’t cut hair.
Isn’t it? This was gifted to my brother from our mother for his birthday. Complete with naugahyde case and chamois ball buffer. She’s an auction hound and therefore a pretty quirky gift giver. I await the day, with bated breath, that she presents me with the ceramic Elvis bust I need for my kitchen. We’re not too sure what prompted the giving of this gift but it’s in my brother’s colours (he’s a fall redhead) so he’ll look really rather dapper next time he goes ten pin bowling.
